Mapping Your Moon Sign

Astrology is a vast subject.  In fact the study of this insight system, is a lifelong pursuit for many a practitioner.  But you don’t have to become a professional reader to utilize the wonderful guidance offered in your “star chart”.

Most people understand a tidbit of Astrology through Sun sign references.  Even skeptics, who have a dim view of things which smack of intuition, insight or inner guidance, often  grudging say, “yea I’m a_________.  The point here is that most people are fascinated with the idea that the birth chart can offer life direction.

Here’s my question. Why is it so difficult for us to understand that our unique life stories  can actually be mirrored in our own personal "star maps?"

Perhaps a bit of an answer comes from the way we have all been socialized and educated to believe, that someone else must tell us who and what we are.  But, by its very nature, the astrological chart, is a visual representation of a person’s  own unique being, as shown through the positioning of the planetary and cosmic events at the time of birth.

All parts of your unique picture work together, to reveal why you’ve chosen to experience this lifetime in terms of life/soul purpose, interactions, situations, circumstances, people and environments. The Moon also provides each of us customized, daily and ongoing self guidance.  This is an important point that I want to emphasize.

Learning and decoding, at least the basics of our own “star chart" can be helpful and liberating ”.  Of course this is not to say that assistance from a professional practitioner isn't immensely helpful.  Getting a full reading can be fantastic, What can add to and enrich your experience though, is being able  to  to discuss your own chart with some clarity and understanding.  When you have spent some time getting to know the tone and feel of your "map", as a means of understanding your own life direction, you really begin to tap into your own inner treasure. Understanding the meaning, patterns and guidance in your chart is the real wealth---  knowing yourself.

In this blog, I want to discuss one planetary body that is totally familiar, but yet we don’t grasp how this astrological clue can be of major benefit.  The Moon is seen as a planet, but it is really a “Luminary” right along with the Sun.  Energetically these two planetary sources provide illumination both literally and figuratively.  The Sun symbolized how we each possess an inner essence that is always evolving, and is  revealed in the way we each show up and “shine” in life, and the world.  This is the “me” part that we show to one another.

Now the Moon is the other “Luminary” part of which emanates  from the inner core of self.  The Moon sign is not always easy to understand, because it’s often working at the unconscious level.  But, if we are willing to observe our life experiences, we can often get a grasp of how the Moon energy is manifesting.  In her book, Moon Signs: The Key to Your Inner Life, world famous astrologer, therapist and writer, Donna Cunningham, writes the following:

“The most basic needs are by birth Moon sign---including what you need to feel emotionally fulfilled, secure and nurtured.  Your Moon sign is a guide to your own personal needs----what they are, and how to meet them.  Although some needs may be universal, we don’t all need or want the same things.  There are very different sets of needs, based on the Moon sign at birth. For instance, Aquarius Moons need space and freedom, feeling confined by close family attachments, while Cancer Moons desperately need that connection to their roots. Virgo Moons need the comfort of predictable routines, while Gemini Moons need constant change.”

Of course, the Moon is important for everyone, but it is even more essential for lunar types. These are people who have the Moon featured prominently in the chart.  People who are also Sun sign Cancerians “Moon people”, and where there are substantial connections between the Moon and other parts of the birth chart.

Paying attention to the natural cycles of the Moon can make our lives a lot easier and productive.  By observing and learning to use the cycles and phases of the Moon may just be the key to your life success and greatness.
